Blue Creek Steelhead Fishing

Kimberly Mason / For The Chronicle

Joe Sheleby, a Centralia High School graduate now living in Olympia, snatched his first steelhead of the season from the Cowlitz River at Blue Creek on Wednesday morning. Tracey Borsom of Fish Country Inc. in Ethel said the fishing on the Cowlitz River is heating up, with the late winter run of steelhead starting to bite. Reports also have about a half-dozen springers being caught at Barrier Dam this past weekend, including one caught on Sunday weighing 23 pounds. If trout is your delight, Mayfield Lake is still a good bet. Swofford Pond for catfish is promising as well.
